About CEPAMS

The CAS-JIC Centre of Excellence for Plant and Microbial Science (CEPAMS) brings together three world-leading laboratories in the UK and China to tackle the global challenges of food security and sustainable health care. The Centre will nurture excellent science and will focus on the improvement of food crops and the production of high-value, beneficial products from plants and microbes.

Our mission is to:

·  to improve the understanding of plants and microbes through excellent collaborative research;

·  to apply that understanding of plants and microbes to improve crops, protect the environment and benefit human health in the UK and China;

·  to provide an outstanding international training environment for the very best scientists of the future;

·  to nurture the China-UK bilateral relationship in science and innovation.

“By bringing together the brightest talents in the field, we hope to maximize their scientific impact and produce top quality research”

Chunli Bai, President CAS

“The hybridization of Chinese and British culture will bring vigour and inspiration”

Weicai Yang, Director IGDB

“... it is only through combining scientific excellence with strategic relevance that we can address the major societal and environmental challenges that lie ahead”

Dale Sanders, Director, JIC

The Centre is a collaboration between the John Innes Centre and two institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology and the Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology).

The Centre was established with funding from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The Centre of Excellence is physical rather than virtual – it will have dedicated laboratory space on the three campuses and establish new research groups to address the mission above.

The new CEPAMS group leaders will be affiliated by IGDB or SIPPE, whose labs will be housed either in Beijing or in Shanghai. CEPAMS group leaders have the privilege to conduct their scientific research in JIC, to co-operate with JIC faculty, and to attend the internal academic meeting in JIC.

“The challenges facing mankind in the decades to come are truly without precedent. It is our belief that the diversity of nature itself will provide many of the responses to these challenges and that science offers the keys to unlock this diversity."

Chris Darby, Director of International Strategy and Liaison, JIC
